Got the correct ecm Friday after work, went home and swapped parts. Now with the correct ecm, correct injectors, and correct intake, it feels much happier.
The 3.3L still lacks low end on the 3.8, but it pulls hard and feels much stronger now that it can actually tune decent. It’ll take a couple tanks to tune completely, but I’ve already noticed less downshifting and better economy, combined with the return of it’s ability to actually break the tires loose.....

Yay! Glad the new ECU helped things! Any other little tweaks you could use to get a little more oomph?

Not sure. I already did some port work, bigger tb, spacer, better exhaust, etc when it was apart, so I’m down to more major stuff at this point. I think no matter what I do I’ll still find the 3.3 to be less torquey down low, it’s just something I don’t think any amount of mods will help.
I think it’ll be fine once it finishes tuning, it’s just a different kind of power delivery than I’m used to.

I’ll admit I had no knowledge of these, so they had Mitsubishi engines and could come with four wheel drive? I did not know. In Hawaii a lot of families had conversion vans or these to fit their giant Samoan football kids in a family vehicle. Compact cars didn’t cut it! One of our n eighbors kids played for the Bengals apparently . The first gen was a hit with this group, now you can see a bunch of used Navigators since that is a cool option to them .

Pretty sure the AWD versions were all Chrysler 3.3/3.8 powered. The FWD versions were available with the SOHC version of the Mitsu 6G72.

How are the Chrysler engines? The only one I’ve had is a 1952 230 flathead 6.

The very early 3.3/3.8 (pre 1991) had rocker mount related issues. Outside of that, they are god damn reliable, change the oil regular, change the pcv every 50k ( failure to do this led to the destruction of my 3.8 ).

It’s also likely that bigger TB and and exhaust also shifted the torque curve up the RPM range a bit.

I’m sure a supercharger would help

Well I know a guy with a 4x4 Astro, but I know surfers and a stripped out one of these could be good. If you had a little lift it wouldn’t be bad for Mexico.

I have a 2" lift on mine, gives me about 14.5" of clearance at the rockers. The rear is simple 2" lift blocks like any straight axle vehicle. The front required strut spacers that I custom made out of 1.25" aluminum.

I’m sure it would........I still haven’t ruled it out, 4-5 lbs of boost would be more than enough realistically and well within what the ecm/fuel system can handle.

Likely some, the lack of bore/stroke on the 3.3 means it already lacks torque and it’s power comes in slightly higher in the rpm range.
The strange thing about intake/exhaust mods on these early Mopar motors is how much they open them up throughout the rpm range without making the low end suffer . Just a simple shorty intake and better exhaust makes noticeable gains in response and power, while tremendously opening up the high rpm power.
I would love to get one on a dyno someday and just install parts one at a time to see the actual numbers.

Would you also fit a bypass valve? How bad would it affect your ability to modulate the throttle? Mini is bad when it comes to throttle modulation.

I would likely forego the bypass valve, although it would be nice to have for cruising. I would fit a wastegate to keep boost in check.
Honestly, it’d be something I’d have to play with, I’ve never actually added a supercharger to a vehicle, turbo sure, but sc is a new ballgame.

I think you would need to have some sort of bypass/wastegate just to get decent mpg.
If you could rig up an electronic bypass, that would be sweet! It could be tuned so that you could get good throttle modulation.

I mean I was getting 12 mpg before I got the correct parts in........could it really get any worse?
I need to do some heavy research on the subject. It’ s something I would like to tackle at some point soon, but I want to get the 1992 repainted before I dig into any more projects, so it’ll be back burnered for a few months. I can do research in the mean time.
